'Skullduggery' by Robert McNealy at Grunt Gallery
Exhibition Dates: May 28 - June 25
Opening: Friday May 27 from 7:30PM
'Skullduggery is a painting installation rooted in paleo-archaeology and physical anthropology. The works consist of an installation of many small paintings of skulls taken from the human fossil record painted on wadded pages of art magazines. The skulls trace the range of human evolution, and the magazine pages, a record of art practices. Together they express the fragility of ourselves as a species and the punctuality of art movements. The installation presents a periodic story of our species painted on periodicals.' (Grunt Gallery)

'METHOD11 is a retrospective of techniques explored over the past five years. Each work is executed in white porcelain and is similar in size, allowing the method itself to become the focus for the viewer by drawing attention to an infinite array of similarities and differences made possible through technique alone.
Severe constraints on form can yield great beauty and a heightened respect for the potential of raw materials. Through a strict and deliberate five-year limitation to four tools, one porcelain clay, and a single chemical element, I was able to explore more deeply what the clay can become. Countless variations can be achieved with minor adjustments to chemical, time, temperature and shape. In this way, the vast creative and transformative potential of simple tools and techniques is finally unbound. The further they are explored the more captivating and entrancing the work becomes.
METHOD11 and all of my works are best described as "two-dimensional" sculptures. Each piece is comprised of hundreds or thousands of small, unique components meticulously created and assembled into multi-level compositions. Seeing the work in person reveals the transparent glazes, raw edges and metamorphic qualities that the viewer can relate to subconsciously and that thereby become an essential part of each individual's intellectual and emotional connection to the work.'

"Nocturne" by Jim Gislason April 1-April 31
April 1, 2011
This series begins with the earliest of the pieces entitled "Aubade", or morning song, and ends with "Nocturne", or evening song. The cycle of paintings between the two is a continuation of work that draws from, and cross references the two realms of painting and poetry. There is both explicitly ( many paintings have a poem physically incorporated into them) and implicitly, a strong relationship between the two disciplines. A vaguely defined 'She', inhabits "An Obligation", the poem that defines the painting "Longship. 'She', clearly refers to the shadow image of the seagoing vessel, the longship itself, but is equally relevant to the dark bird in mid flight of "Aubade", or the imperious condor crest in "Nocturne". The poem can slip it's specific location and do work elsewhere. Likewise, the visual images have interplay with the written images. In this way the arc of the work presented here can be more than a linear progression, a more organic, musical interplay of ideas and themes.
Unintended Calculations
February 11, 2011
Curated by Indigo, Unintended Calculations brings together a group of internationally renowned artists – Augustine Kofie (LA), Jerry Inscoe (PDX), Remi/Rough (LDN) and Scott Sueme (VAN) – for an exhibition at Becker Galleries and two collaborative murals at Moda Hotel exploring four very different approaches to abstraction. Working in a variety of mediums, these artists have evolved the letterform building blocks of their shared graffiti background, deconstructing and rebuilding them as compositions of color, line, shape and movement.
