Holly Armishaw was born and raised in a small Canadian prairie town. When accepted to Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1997, she moved to Vancouver where she has been living and working since. She began exhibiting while still attending art school and received several scholarships during her academic career. Armishaw majored in photography and studied both traditional and digital techniques. Her work was influenced by her complimentary academic studies, focusing on philosophy and psychology. Her early work explored contemporary scientific endeavors including genetic engineering, cloning, cryonics, and quantum physics.
Today, her work continues to reflect her interest in metaphysics and the potential for photography and digital imaging to reflect those theories. Her work has been exhibited in 16 different cites internationally. Venues include YYZ in Toronto, Dazibao and Wilder & Davis in Montreal, Presentation House Gallery in North Vancouver, MUBE (Museu Brasileiro de Escultura) in Sao Paulo, Mobius in Boston, NADA Art Fair in Miami Beach, MASS MoCA in Massachutes, and the MOMA in Wales and the Fluxmuseum in Fort Worth. Armishaw’s work has also appeared in several articles and books, both online and in print, including Folha de Sao Paulo, VR Magazine and Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art. She is currently travelling throughout Europe and preparing for her first solo exhibit in Vancouver at Becker Galleries in the fall of 2011.
